Juan Eduardo Figueroa Valdés

Juan Eduardo has over 30 years of experience in dispute resolution, mainly serving as an arbitrator in construction contracts, energy, real estate, public works concessions, and general corporate conflicts, including mergers and acquisitions, shareholders' agreements, and joint ventures. He has participated in more than 130 arbitration cases across Latin America, focusing on countries such as Chile, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, and Bolivia. He holds a Law and Social Sciences degree from the Universidad de Chile, located in Santiago, Chile.

He possesses a Master's Degree in International Law, Trade, Investment, and International Arbitration from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. In addition, he holds a Diploma in the Legal Regime of Public Works Concessions from Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile, as well as a Master's Degree in Economics and Management for Lawyers (M.E.G.A.) from Universidad Gabriela Mistral, Santiago, Chile.

He is an independent arbitrator and consultant, delivering legal reports on his expertise. This follows an extensive career spanning several decades within the real estate, infrastructure, energy, and construction sectors, where he provided legal counsel throughout all phases of business operations and held directorial positions in real estate, construction, services, hotels, and tourism enterprises. Moreover, he has served as a substitute judge and has been a member of the Supreme Court of Chile.

Simultaneously, he possesses substantial experience serving as Chairman of Dispute Boards, particularly within the mining construction industry in Chile, and functioning as a mediator in commercial disputes pertaining to corporate and construction matters.

Juan Eduardo currently chairs the Legislation Commission of the Chilean Chamber of Construction. He has also served as a legal advisor to ACOP—Cámara Nacional de los Servicios Inmobiliarios AG. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

He serves as a founding member and former vice president of the Chilean Society of Construction Law, is a fellow of the International Academy of Construction Lawyers, and holds membership in the Latin American Group of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). He has previously acted as a counselor for both the Chilean Bar Association and the Interamerican Bar Association. Furthermore, he is a member of the Spanish and Ibero-American Arbitration Club and represents the CChC before the Civil Society Council of the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic.

Juan Eduardo has been recognized by the prestigious rankings of Chambers Latin America as one of the Most in Demand Arbitrators and as a Senior Statespeople in real estate; in the Lexology index (formerly Who's Who Legal), he is recommended in Arbitration and acknowledged as a Global Elite Thought Leader in Construction; in Leaders League, he is noted for Arbitration, and in Best Lawyers, for international arbitration.

He is also listed among the Arbitrators of CAM Santiago-Chile, ICDR, AmCham Peru, and on the lists of arbitrators for the Center for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP), the Chamber of Arbitration and Mediation of the Federation of Industries of Paraná (CAMFIEP), among others.

He is additionally a member of the Dispute Boards of the Arbitration and Mediation Center of Santiago and the Arbitration Center of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima, Peru.

Academic experience

Juan Eduardo is a professor at GAR Academy in the UK, specializing in Construction Arbitration.


He also teaches Arbitration and Dispute Boards in the LLM program on International Arbitration, Investments and International Trade, offered jointly by the University of Heidelberg and the University of Chile.


Additionally, he is the academic director of the diplomas in Construction Law, Real Estate Law, and Urban Law at the Universidad de los Andes, and he teaches the Diploma in International Arbitration at Universidad Austral in Argentina.
